Alien Ant Farm

This September I had the opportunity to meet up with one of my favorite bands that I never got to see years ago. Alien Ant Farm recently came to the area to play a one-off show for some of their favorite Nor-Cal fans. Not the most formal interview, as all of us got a little loose over some cold brews, so there were a lot of good laughs, and plenty of strange and hilarious comments I shouldn’t put in print. We did, however, get a chance to chat about what the band had been up to for the last few years...

I’m here at the Avalon in Santa Clara and I just saw Alien Ant Farm tear it up on stage. It looks like everyone's in a good mood - got a couple beers in ‘em. Relax mode. How are you guys doing?
DM: Dude, we love Northern California crowds. They have always been, since we started playing outside our area, a treat. Everyone is just so respectful - they love the music. It’s great.
TZ: So I think the answer is: We’re good.

You guys are from Riverside, and you gave a shout out to Papa Roach on stage. You guys play a lot of shows together?
DM: We love Papa Roach.
TC: Coming up here just reminds us of sleeping on each others couches. We’d play a show with them, they’d play a show with us, back and forth.
DM: Playing the Cactus Club in San Jose. That stinky little shit box was the greatest club in the world.
TC: I think I got an ass worm from there...(everybody laughs)

So you guys had a few member changes, but are back to the original lineup?
DM: Well, when a band spends enough time together, on the road, things can get heated, and you start to kinda hate each other. Brothers hate each other, but at the end of the day, we love each other. We’ve squashed most of our little “things.” When we get a show like tonight, a few hundred people in a hot room, it feels good, it feels...natural. It’s refreshing, like a cry, or a good douche.

I’ve cried, but I haven’t douched yet. I’m working my way up to it. (laughs)
TZ: You’re just nervous! You’re nervous!

So your last release was a few years ago. Anything on the way?
DM: We’ve been writing for the last 7 or 8 months or so, and have 11 songs ready to go and about 5 or 6 ideas simmering, so...

You know, you guys are one of those bands that, even if I hadn’t heard your new stuff, I could hear it on the radio, and go “that’s Alien Ant Farm!”
DM: I like that.
TC: That’s from having a lot of influences.
DM: That’s hugely important. I’m not saying I’m Van Halen. You can hear just the tiniest riff and know it’s Van Halen, and that’s huge.
