Long before I had a chance to hear the music of F1rst Class Citizen, I was already familiar with the name due to all the hype around the band. Although they have only been on the local Sacramento band scene for a short time, their presence has been huge. Once I did get the chance to hear their EP, “Naked and Famous”, which was released in July, I was hooked and I was even more amazed when I saw them live. The EP is to good for words while the chemistry and love they show for their craft when they are on stage together is one that is unmatched by any Sacramento band I have ever seen. They also put on one hell of show, involving their audience and storming the stage as any seasoned musician should. Their music has recently become available on iTunes and if you have not had the chance to hear them, you should definitely check them out at www.F1rstclasscitizen.com. I had the pleasure of sitting down with the band and catching an interview with them and this is what they had to say.
-By Jamie Candelaria
F1rst Class Citizen is: Xander Jones: Vocals, Lydia (Lydvicious) Gavin: Guitar and Vocals, Shawn (McLewee) Wilson: Guitar, Ryan (Nomad) Henderson: Bass and Ryan (Whippo) Whippo: Drums.
Tell me about F1rst Class Citizen?
Xander: We came up with the name F1rst Class Citizen because well, look at us. No really, it’s new, it’s different. I mean we’ve got doctors with tattoos now. The old fashioned idea of “first class citizen” is exactly that, old fashioned and we’re bringing it forward and showing everyone that we are “first class citizens”.
So you guys were just nominated for a Sammie for best hard rock….
Xander: Fuck Yeah!
How does that feel?
Lydia: It’s good.
Nomad: Yeah it’s good.
Xander: We played our very first show in the beginning of January and have really only done a handful of shows since but that first show just started a snowball effect. We have already headlined out own shows. We are support for Sick Puppies at the Ace of Spades October 8. It’s just been growing and growing.
And you guys have played shows with Saving Abel, Taproot, and Shortie which is awesome.
Xander: We are all seasoned musicians and we have paid our dues and I think it shows. We don’t have to go out there and play a million shows in little tiny bars to experience and get a fan base.
Lydia: The fan reception has been great. We have bad ass listeners and they are really supportive.
Xander: That is what it’s all about, the paparazzi.
For those who have not heard your music, how would you classify it?
Whippo: Dead sexy!
Lydia: Our genre is called sex rock, it’s totally new.
Shawn: Never heard anything like it before.
Lydia: You haven’t and it is our goal to fuck ear pussies on a global level. So that’s what we’re going to do.
Xander: We are pioneering in the image, we are pioneering in the musical styling, and we are pioneers, without the funny clothes.
When you write music how does that work, does one of you do the writing or do you get together and jam out?
Xander: I do everything.
Shawn: I disagree!
Lydia: We found these tablets…
Xander: and they had tablature all over them.
Lydia: Tablets with tablature:
Shawn: You want me to answer that for real….it will be the only question we answer for real. Between Lydia and I we write most of the music. Then Xander and Lydia sit down and come up with the vocals and the lyrics.
Whippo: We do nothing.
Shawn: I was going to say you guys were the hired guns.
Whippo: We’re still waiting to get paid.
Xander: Wait you guys get paid?
Nomad: We’re not getting paid?
Shawn: Then Ryan and Whippo come in and add their flavor to it and do their thing.
As a band who are your influences?
Whippo: Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian.
Nomad: Lady Gaga
Shawn: Personally or collectively, I’d say everything.
Xander: My favorite is Kimberly Cain.
Shawn: We all listen to vastly different music. Whippo is actually a fan of Enya, that’s no joke.
Whippo: I have the whole discography.
Shawn: He’s not lying, that part of this interview is not a joke.
Whippo: That’s right, that’s my biggest influence.
You just put out your first EP “Naked and Famous” in July, what’s next for you guys?
Xander: We do the naked regularly so we’re just waiting on the famous.
Shawn: Well now that we got the website up we are going to play more shows, start doing out of town shows, and then probably get back in the studio and start tracking the next EP.
