INTERVIEW WITH DOPESICK SEPT. 10TH

Ok, I caught up with Adam of Dopesick, whom I consider a friend and a huge resource. He has been there for me since I started in this business and has always showed me the respect I deserve, so I can only repay the favor by doing everything in my power to help him make it to the top. He's seen a lot and has a lot to tell, so I hope you enjoy what he has to say. Look for a follow up on his side projects in the near future.


BENJI- First off can you state your name and band name for the record?
ADAM- This is Adam from Dopesick. What..s up Mutha Trucka..s?

BENJI- Where did the name Dopesick come from?
ADAM- Just a bunch of shit being thrown around. People saying dope, people saying shit, it sounded cool to me.

BENJI-Since I have known you and Dopesick,the band has had a lot of struggles in the last few years, one of them being the tragic death of former bass player Jason. What is the current status of the band since this happened and who is the new bass player?
ADAM- Our new bass player is a boy named Zach. When Jason died, Ben and I just started doing stuff acoustically, kind of for Jason, kind of just because we were writing different shit based on our mood. Out of the blue I got a call from Sebastian Bach, Mr. Skid Row, so I went and played for him. I toured with Alice Cooper, it was crazy.

BENJI- Do you mind talking about Jason for the people that don't know what I..m talking about?
ADAM- Jason was actually on his way to band practice, while coming across 17, in Santa Cruz to San Jose. While riding his motorcycle, he lost control and hit a tree, and went to heaven. He..s too good a person to go anywhere else, he was just a really cool guy.

BENJI- What side projects have you been working on and what other bands were you in before?
ADAM- I used to be in Skinlab, and me and Steve went at it with Dopesic, and then I went with Sebastian. I did a side project with Ben Hanson, called Fallen Awake. It..s kind of cool; it..s mellow, very mellow.

BENJI- Why do you do what you do, as in musically?
ADAM- I ask myself that everyday. That..s the only thing that keeps me happy, sane. It allows me to watch people smile from what I..m doing. I guess that..s why I was put here, to make people happy, I know that! You know, if I worked at McDonalds serving you a fucking burger, you're not going to remember me from jack shit, but you hear Dopesick and you going to remember that shit, and it..s never going to go away.

BENJI- Tell me the feeling that you have on stage when playing in front of fans, whether it is 2 people or 2,000 people?
ADAM- Most of the time I just blackout, not from alcohol or anything, I just go into my own little place. If you..ve seen us play you..d know that we..re kind of nuts. Everything good and bad just comes out through our music. But for me, I just like to get the worst of my emotions out up there. That..s when I feel the best. It..s therapeutic; the release is like beating a tree with a baseball bat for 45 mins.

BENJI- What..s the craziest thing that you saw on tour with Sebastian Bach?
ADAM- Oh my god, Dee Snider of Twisted Sister in full make-up. The fireworks that I lit off somewhere in New York. I set off about 30 mins of fireworks. There were cops everywhere, but there were so many fans that the cops couldn..t get to where I was at. Fortunately I didn..t get in trouble, but once I got on the bus, I was in big trouble with management and shit. Other than that we had a good time.

BENJI- What..s wrong with the music industry and what has to be done to make changes, if any need to be made?
ADAM- People need to be more original, and quit cookie cutting shit. People need to have their own minds, just quit following and be a leader. As far as the music industry goes, Jesus Christ, it..s like the biggest bunch of shit, all of it is money, money, money, money. It used to be about the music, now everybody just wants to own somebody. The only way you become a ..Rock star.. is by knowing someone. Look at American Idol. I..ve been playing guitar for 20 fucking years, these guys just go on American idol, sing a song, and if they sing it perfect they get a record deal. What the fuck is that? That..s the fucking music industry, that..s what we get..American Idol. That..s what I think of the music industry, a bunch of freaking rubbish.

BENJI- What..s up next for Dopesick and when is the next show?
ADAM- The next show is in Chico on Oct. 21st at a frat party, then the next night in Vallejo we are doing a show for DV8 Tattoo..s. We are doing a week tour in Colorado, then maybe Vegas. We have a play down in Hollywood at The Roxanne on Oct. 29th, I hope. Then hopefully we..ll be playing with Prong in Nov. Basically we..re just doing anything that we can to get out there to play music and let it get out to the people.
