Sky Eats Airplane Interview
By Jessica Skelton

YMM: Hey guys. Hope all is well. Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for Your Music Magazine. Congrats on getting signed to Equal Vision. It has almost been a month since you’ve been signed. Does that mean we can expect a new album sometime in the near, not so distant future? How are you hoping (or not hoping) to broaden your music, whether it be lyrically, vocally, technically, or whatever ‘lly’ you see fitting? What has your limited experience on a label been like thus? Do you guys have that “a little green behind the ear” feeling, or do you feel pretty confident hurdling towards the next stage of your careers?

SEA: I think we feel both a little green and confident. We’ve recorded what will be our debut on the album, and we definitely feel its the coolest thing we’ve done. The album is everything more lly i guess haha. The music is more complex, the melodies are better, its all just cool stuff haha.

YMM: What bands have shaped you as musicians and writers? How long have you been playing your respective instruments?

SEA: Bands like extol, meshuggah, telepopmusik, and in flames have all been pretty big influences on whats happening with us now. Ive been playing bass for 3 years, but guitar for 8 years before that. Kennys been playing drums for 5 years, zacks been playing for 8 years, and lee has been for about 4 years.

YMM: As musicians, how do you compromise to ensure that every band member is brining their own visions to the table? Have their been times where you have felt that toes have been stepped on or has it pretty mellow?

SEA: I dont think weve ever felt that we were stepping on toes. Something will be written and we'll go man thats cool, and thats about it haha.

YMM: The contrasting elements within your music generate an inertia that propels your songs into an experimental realm. How are you able to integrate such a mix-bag of styles into 3-4 minute songs without making the tracks sound like they’re trying too hard? Where do you draw your more experimental influences?

SEA: I think not trying too hard to force songs keeps it out of the trying too hard realm haha. Just having everything flow and writing parts that are generated by theparts before makes it all work out. Im not sure how experimenta we are either really either, but if thats what you hear thats cool haha.

YMM: Can you give just a brief history of how the band came together?

SEA: Well it was originally lee and a guy named brack just kinda messin around with random programs and electronics. They got together some stuff they thought was cool and put it on myspace, and then it caught on. Brack left the band to go do other things. Lee decided to get a full band together and thats where we all came in hah

YMM: What sparked the idea of a contest as a means to finding a new vocalist? When did Jerry join the band? Coming into it all, was he prepared to deliver the wide scale of vocals the band was looking for, or did it take time for him to acclimate his style to that of the band? How was it for Jerry and the band having him come into the band with already established material [2006’s release Everything Perfect on the Wrong Day]? How did he put his own twists and style into the songs that were originally performed by Brack Cantrell?

SEA: We just werent finding anyone in our area that we felt totally confident with, so a nationwide search seemed like the best way to do it. jerry joined the band in march of 2007. Well the reason we picked him was because of his wide vocal range, so it didnt take him long at al to put his style on things. He has kept just about everything the same as brack did, just added a bit more range to it i suppose.

YMM: How is the tour going? Any bizarre, hysterical, or scarring stories from life on the road? Are you guys the type of band that goes out partying it up every night or are you more the band that kicks it in the tour bus, playin’ video games and generally keeping it mellow?

SEA: Id say we're more of a mellow band for the most part. Though when everyones going to hang out we're generaly down. Its just hard to keep up with partying when youre tired haha. Tape is the most important tour necessity haha. And this tour has been great so far. Definitely the biggest we've done. So big ups to alesana for bringin us out right now woo

YMM: Any secrets you are to indulge?

SEA: This is all lies, we started on one of those making the band shows that never got aired.

YMM: Well once again, thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for the fans.

SEA: Thanks so much for caring to ask us stuff haha.
